Barbara Hurst 1938 – 2025 Barbara Nell Garrett Hurst, born July 20, 1938, in Austin, Texas, passed away peacefully on January 2, 2025, after a brave battle with complications from the flu, compounded by other health challenges. Barbara’s strength and resilience defined her life, as she faced each challenge with courage and grace. Barbara was the beloved daughter of Nelson George Garrett and Mildred Agnes Garrett and sister to her brother, Nelson Jean Garrett. She married William “Bill” Hurst in 1956, and together they built a life that included opening Hurst Automotive in 1971. Though their marriage ended in 1981, Barbara’s spirit of determination continued to shine as she transitioned to a successful career in real estate, working from 1984 until her retirement in 2005. Barbara was preceded in death by her son, Randy Hurst, on July 1, 2022, a loss that left an indelible mark on her heart. She poured her love into her granddaughters, Taylor Teets Richardson (husband Jacob Richardson) and Dana Teets. Her newest and greatest joy was her great-grandson, Theodore Robert Richardson, affectionately known as “Teddy,” who was born on September 5, 2024. Barbara was overjoyed to meet Teddy and considered him a precious blessing in her final months. Barbara is survived by numerous nieces and nephews, who will remember her fondly. Barbara graduated from Austin High School and began her career at Southwestern Bell Telephone, where she worked from 1956 to 1971. Throughout her life, she embraced every role with passion, whether as a businesswoman, realtor, mother, grandmother, or great-grandmother. She was known for her vibrant spirit, her ability to “use all nine livesand then some,” and her deep devotion to those she loved. Barbara loved life, her family, and especially her grandchildren. Her spirit and love carried her through countless challenges, and though she fought hard to stay with her family, she was ready to reunite with her son, Randy, in peace. A Celebration of Life will be held on January 12, 2025, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Balcones Country Club. The family invites all who knew Barbara to join in remembering her remarkable life. Barbara’s family takes comfort in knowing she is at rest, surrounded by love and cherished memories. She will be deeply missed.
