Skye Hyanil Thompson, affectionately called Cielo by his family and friends, passed away on July 8, 2026, at the young age of 34. An ingenious tech creator, artist, and deeply compassionate soul, Skye leaves behind a legacy woven from intellect, creativity, and boundless love.

     Born in Virginia on December 20, 1991, to Shon Thompson and Lan Martinez, Skye moved to Texas at age two, spending the rest of his life in San Antonio, the city he called home. He moved through life with a very sensitive heart as both a maker and a constant seeker, holding the truths of the universe in one hand and the beauty of spirit in the other.

     Skye attended Alamo Heights High School and later pursued environmental science at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), wanting to develop solutions for food deserts and clean water access. He demonstrated a strong work ethic from a young age, starting with his first job sweeping floors at a neighborhood salon at 12 years old. In elementary school, he was deeply inspired by computer education. He became a self-taught programmer and mastered complex computer languages entirely on his own, building useful software programs and selling his first app at just 18 years old. His career included providing tech support for healthcare companies, Facebook, Hulu, and Sondr, as well as developing software tools to enhance workplace efficiency for several corporations. One of his proudest achievements was releasing an app specifically designed for IT professionals shortly before his passing.

     Cielo was a lifelong creator. As an artist, he expressed his emotions by writing cinematic stories and screenplays, capturing moments through photography, painting, crafting small sculptures, and creating pencil drawings daily. He drew minimalistic line drawing of familiar places, and some from his imagination, and called them “a simpler life”. He proudly wrote, produced, and sold a few songs for rappers and singers on independent music platforms. As a teenager, he found freedom and community as a skateboarder, spending countless days skating city ramps, stair rails, and sidewalks around San Antonio with a loyal group of friends that remained close to his heart until his passing.

     Skye’s spirituality was as expansive as his mind, believing that science and spirituality were never at odds. His belief in life after death was beautifully grounded in the First Law of Thermodynamics: that energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transformed. He knew that the love he brought into this world would simply shift into a new form within the universe. He prioritized daily meditation and expressing gratitude and found welcoming comfort in attending the Universalist Unitarian Church and the Lien Hoa Buddhist Temple, attending both with his mother on Sundays. 

     Facing many difficult challenges throughout his life, he ultimately emerged as a resilient beacon of love and peace. He was disheartened by the normalization of hate in society and, in the later years of his life, became more passionate about peace and being a positive force in the world. He regularly spoke of the potential for a conflict-free world. Being so sensitive and passionate about peace, love, and social justice, he desired to help others at every possible opportunity. He loved animals of all kinds, was a vegetarian, and took care of neighborhood cats. Family was very important to Cielo, and he dreamed of working hard enough to eventually take care of everyone he loved. His little sister, Livi, was the light of his life, and her future was the ultimate motivator behind his life goals and ambitions. He had a very strong bond with his mother and they spent every Sunday together, communing over spirituality, their lives,  and the fall of empires.  May Skye’s memory inspire those who knew him to always seek beauty in simplicity, embrace creativity and knowledge, and approach life with an open heart and gratitude.

     Skye is survived by his devoted mother, Lan Martinez, his step-father, Eric, whom he affectionately called “Pop”; his beloved little sister, Olivia; his treasured grandparents, Phylle, Amanda, Kon, and Zhenya; as well as his best friend and chosen brother, Vinny. He also leaves a wide circle of aunts and uncles, cousins, former step-siblings, and loving childhood friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Shon, in 2019, with whom he is now reunited in the beautiful conservation of energy. His memory will live on forever through art he created, innovations he developed, and the love he shared so generously.

     A celebration of Skye’s remarkable life was held on July 26th at Beacon House, beautifully reflecting his journey. It was led jointly by monastics from the Lien Hoa Buddhist Temple and a minister from the Unitarian Church, with a song performed by TBow Gonzalez. Beautiful songs were later performed by his sister, Olivia Martinez, accompanied by Dominic Treviño.
