Tammy Lynne Schmitt (née Gabbert) passed on July 16, 2023, at the age of 57. Born in Indianapolis, Indiana on June 16, 1966, she spent her life in Jasper and Indianapolis, Indiana.

Tammy’s family moved to Jasper in June 1978, where she attended Jasper High School, class of 1984. She never let anyone forget the talents she displayed as a member of the basketball and track teams.

She was married to Jerry Schmitt in April 1982. Shortly after, she gave birth to her first child Crystal and moved to Germany with her young family. She returned to America in 1986 and gave birth to Kendra in 1987. They moved to Indianapolis in 1988, where they were joined by Zachary in 1991 and Tiffany and Brittany in 1992. Tammy cherished her family and made motherhood her life’s work.

She re-married to Alex Lastra in April 2004 and welcomed Nathan and Sadie into the family. Tammy will be fondly remembered for welcoming many children into her family and is survived by dozens of neighborhood kids that knew her as Mom.

Tammy lived a domestic life full of hard work at the distribution center of ConAgra Foods, where she worked for 27 years. She enjoyed road trips with her family, listening to country music and rock ‘n’ roll. She planned picnics in the park and was always looking for a reason to be on the boat at Lake Monroe. She loved date night with her boyfriend Terry when he would take her out to show her off. She always looked forward to going to church with Terry and worshiping with her family. Tammy loved raising puppies and leaves behind her precious Ladybug, Alico, and Bayley. Her greatest joy was being with her grandbabies and watching them have fun. She was so incredibly proud of the family she created.

She is survived by her mother Beatrice “Suzie” Gabbert (née Kavanaugh), sister Tracy Lewis and her husband Steve Lewis, sister Teresea Petersen and her husband Brian “BJ” Petersen, brother Michael Gabbert and his wife Carol Gabbert, sister Tina Sabotin and her husband Eric Sabotin, brother Patrick Gabbert and his wife Juretta Gabbert, daughter Crystal Schmitt and her partner Brandon Lewis, daughter Kendra Schmitt and her partner Xeria “Xef” Nacario AKA “Mom’s Favorite”, son Zachary Schmitt, daughter Tiffany Johnson and her husband Jacob Johnson, daughter Brittany Schmitt and her partner Dalton Johnson, and grandchildren Maximus Bond, Dillon Bond, Kingston Lewis, Kendyl Johnson, Zoey Johnson, Leah Johnson, and Hayes Johnson.
