Keith Brummet

2004 – 2025
Lived in Wall, South Dakota

Let the memory of Keith be with us forever.

Keith Brummet was born December 30, 2004 in Kearney, Nebraska to Krystle Odell-Pursley and Steven Brummet. In September 2017 Keith and his mother settled in Wall, South Dakota where he started attending school as a 7th grader. The community quickly welcomed Keith and he became well known around town. Keith participated in track, football, wrestling, baseball, basketball, trap shooting, and drama before graduating from Wall High School, in May 2023. Throughout high school Keith worked at Wall Food Center where he became completely enmeshed in the community.

At the time of his passing, he was living with his mother and stepfather in Wall and working for Wall Food Center. Keith really enjoyed helping customers and engaging with everyone in the community. Shortly after Keith’s passing, I received a card from someone who had met Keith at the grocery store. That individual wanted to share how compassionate Keith was while assisting them with their grocery shopping right before Thanksgiving. She had shared with Keith they had lost their son several days before, and Keith went above and beyond by helping them through the store, assisting them with the rest of their shopping, and then carried their groceries to their car. She wanted me to know Keith made them feel very special from that interaction during their time of grieving, and they greatly appreciated his kindness and smiling face.

Keith had a heart of gold and would stop and help anyone regardless of what he had going on. One of the running jokes in our family was in relation to Keith’s time and being on Keith’s time. Keith did things in his own time and in his own way, regardless of how long it took or when it might get done. Usually, his time schedule was not on everyone else’s, however being on Keith’s time schedule came with its perks, you always knew you were getting his undivided attention, and he was there because he wanted to be and not because he felt he had to be. Keith was truly there to help/listen with whatever you were dealing with, and he put his whole heart into it, whether it was from the advice or listening ear he gave or the help he provided. Keith was known to listen to you to pour your heart out to him then he would turn around and do or say something to make you laugh or smile to break the tension of the moment, just because he could and always at the right time to ease the conversation. When he assisted you with a task, he would complete the project in its entirety and to the best of his ability. For this reason, on his days off he was often out helping people with general items around their homes.

The stories which have been shared with me after his passing paint a beautiful picture of a young man who respected others, worked hard, loved deeply, and made people feel valued. Keith was the kind of teammate coaches hope for, the kind of friend people trust, and the kind of community member every small town is proud to call their own. Keith will be remembered for his generous heart, steady presence, humble character and genuine compassion. Whether helping a customer through a difficult moment, supporting a teammate, staying late after practice cleaning up, or lending his time and energy to anyone who needed assistance, Keith lived his life with sincerity and warmth. His smile, humor, and natural ability to brighten a room left lasting impressions on everyone he met.

Keith was proceeded in death by his father Steven Brummet (July 12, 2017) and his maternal grandfather Craig Odell (February 16, 2016).

A memorial has been setup for Keith and is awarded to a graduating high school student from Wall High School, Philip High School, & Kadoka High Schools. Any contributions to the memorial can be made at First Interstate Bank in Wall, SD.

Keith did a lot of things here in Wall. He was a wrestler, a football player, a thrower, and participated in just about every kind of activity we offer in our little town. But more than anything else Keith was one of the boys. That may seem like a simple thing but its really not. It means something. It’s a lifelong fraternity of people that grew up the same way in the same town. You are never too young or old for membership and even after you’re gone you live on inside of the brotherhood as a memory and a kindred spirit. I know in my mind that every small town has boys just like ours, but my heart tells me that the boys we raise here in our little community are the best you can find anywhere in our nation. Keith was one of those boys. We preach family on our football team, and Keith was part of that family and years from now, when we are all distant memories, we will live on in this community. Our names and way of life are etched into the trophies in our school and the hearts of our community. We leave that legacy for the generations that come after us, and Keith will always be part of that tradition and legacy. The names and the faces of the kids growing up in our town will change but the way our community feels about them never will. I’m glad that Keith got the opportunity to represent us not only in the activities he was involved with, but also by the character and kindness that is so often mentioned by the people he interacted with. I’m proud to have had him be a part of our family. I’m so sorry for his loss, but I’m so happy that he got to grow up here and be a part of our town and be a friend to so many of us. Coach Bessette

Keith was the kind of player every coach hopes to have and every teammate is better for knowing. He worked hard in the weight room, pushing himself to improve. Watching him grow and develop as a student athlete throughout his years was amazing to watch. He was often one of the last to leave practice, not because he had to be, but because he wanted to help however he could. Gentle and kind to those who surrounded him, Keith transformed when it was time to play, leaving every ounce of effort and heart he had on the field. Keith’s selflessness and true eagle spirit will live on in all of us who had the joy of coaching him or playing alongside him. Coach Heathershaw
