On April 9, 2024, Lula passed away peacefully with her daughter by her side at the age of 82.

Lula was born Lillian Scott and the fifth of six children born to the union of Robert and Clara (Houston) Scott in Taylor, Texas, on April 25, 1941. Changing her name shortly after to Lula Mae, without the State of Texas knowing until 1965. Affectionately known as "Sister," she received her formal education at O.L. Price High School, an all-black school during segregation. During this time, she was a member of the school's choir club and taught herself how to play the piano at home. She accepted Christ early and began her Christian service at Zion Chapel Baptist Church, Taylor Texas. Upon graduating from High School, she attended St. Phillips Community College in San Antonio, graduating in 1961 with an Associates of Arts degree. Being a math whiz, she attended Texas Southern University in Houston, Texas, completing a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in mathematics in During this time her parents decided to make their homestead in San Antonio.

Lula met and married Air Force Sgt Ronnie Stevens in 1967 at the home of her parents, then moved to Travis AFB, California. This union was blessed with one child in 1970. Upon the dissolution of the marriage, she returned to her home state of Texas. She was hired in 1971 at Fox Technical High School as their newest math teacher, where she made lifelong friends with cohorts, left lasting impressions on her students, and served the community for 25 years. She would leave Fox Tech to join the Jefferson Davis Middle School staff, where she would retire after 30 years of being an outstanding educator with numerous accolades.

Lula joined the Lilly of the Valley Missionary Baptist Church in 1963 under the pastorate of the late Reverend Fred D. Smith where her parents and two of her siblings were already attending. With her knowledge of playing the piano, she was asked to become the church's pianist. Sis Stevens loved her church and was a committed cornerstone and crusader for Christ, who would not let anything deter her from serving the Lord. She played for the churches, various groups such as, the children’s choir, young adults’ choir, senior choir, and the men’s chorus. Additionally, she would go Christmas caroling with several choir members door to door in the vicinity of the church. Sis Stevens served as a member of the Board of Trustees, Financial Clerk, Church Treasurer, and Crusader for Christ. She was Lilly of the Valley’s musician for over 35 years and was an active member of the Lula was a loving mother, grandmother, and loyal friend. She was very adventurous in her younger years and loved to take cruises and visit historic sites throughout the United States. She had a passion for serving people by caring for those less fortunate, teaching young pupils to play the piano, and tutoring math students in her own home. She was also a mentor to women and men who would confide in her or just want to learn how to sing better. Whatever the task, Lula always gave her best. Her passion continued with her love of gardening. She would plant gardens around the house and have memorial gardens for her deceased loved ones.

Lula was smart, funny, and had a no-nonsense personality. If you didn’t want to know the truth, then you knew not to ask for her opinion. Lula was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Clara Scott; siblings, Doris Verse, Almarie Daniels, Robert Scott Jr., Rev. Raymond Scott, and Clora Nance; nephews, Marvin Brown Sr., Wayne Nance, Ewell Daniels Jr., and James Scott; nieces, Darlene Martin, Kimberly Scott, Gwendolyn Woods, and Carolyn Verse; great-niece Phyllis Brown; and longtime life partner James Drake.

Lula leaves to cherish her memories: her daughter, Adrienne Stevens of Missouri City, Texas; her granddaughter, Angel Gayden of San Antonio, Texas; her bonus children, Vernon Drake of Rockwall, Texas, and Sharon Drake Ekondo of San Antonio, Texas; god-daughter, Willinda Franklin Spencer (Mark Sr.) of San Antonio, Texas; her sister-in-law, Barbara Scott of Austin, Texas; her nephews, Bill Brown, Gregory Daniels Sr. (Pat), Byron Daniels Sr. (Michelle) all of San Antonio, Scotty Clemons (Myrtle) of Troy, Texas, and Anthony Clemons (Miste) of Hurst, Texas; her nieces, Sandra Verse Alvarado of Austin, Texas; Faye Smith (Maurice) of Missouri City, Texas; Angela Nance of San Antonio, Texas, Michelle Austin (Terry) of Temple, Texas; and a host of extended great nieces, great nephews, and family members to include her best friend from TSU, Mary Washington.

Lula will undoubtedly be missed by everyone she touched, leaving a remarkable legacy that will stand throughout the test of time.
