Mary Despain

1924 – 1930
Lived in Indianapolis, Indiana

Let the memory of Mary be with us forever.

Mary Alice was born to Dewey and Grace (Reed) Despain on September 15, 1924. Her mother, Gracie, is the granddaughter of Rev. Andrew Jackson Whitley. Rev. Whitley is buried just behind Mary Alice. Mary Alice passed away at the age of 5 on June 20, 1930 from meningitis. She died in her father’s arms. Her mother was pregnant with their second daughter, Norma Dean, at the time. Gracie was unable to attend Mary Alice’s funeral due to her pregnancy. She gave birth to Norma on July 5, 1930 - a mere 16 days later. Norma would be their only child after the death of Mary Alice. Norma is my mother.
