Memories of Daddy by Michelle Knowles
Today is one of the most difficult days of my life. Standing here to say goodbye to my father is something I never truly could have prepared myself for. No matter how much time you have, no matter how ready you think you are, nothing prepares you for a moment like this.
Dad, you were a part of my life from the very beginning, and it is hard to imagine moving forward without you here. There are so many memories, so many conversations, so many quiet, ordinary moments I wish I could hold onto just a little longer.
As your daughter, I am grateful for the life you gave me, for the things you taught me, and for the ways you helped shape the person I am today. Life was not always perfect, and neither were we, but through every season, you were still my father, and I will always be your daughter. That bond can never be taken away.
I will always remember the way you showed up for us, in every possible way. The rides to school where you’d make us read you the headlines and news, a little tradition I later found myself passing on to my own children without even realizing it. The Saturdays with your fluffiest pancakes, while Uncle David showed up with McDonald’s or pizza, turning an ordinary morning into something we looked forward to all week. The afternoons you’d take us to the game room, promising us something wild and it always turning into nothing but laughter, games, and more play than we knew what to do with. You always found a way to make life lighter, even when it wasn’t. I remember how you made Christmas feel like magic. Cookies and milk left out for Santa, and even though we knew deep down there was no such man, we played along anyway, because we loved you, and because we loved how much joy it brought you to watch us believe. Those memories are etched in my heart forever. You always put us before yourself, Dad, even when we probably didn’t deserve it. Backgammon, checkers, basketball — you bought us every game imaginable, always trying your best to make sure we had joy in our lives. Food in our cupboards, food in our stomachs, that mattered to you. You were a provider in every sense of the word. There was never a single day our lights or water were off. You believed deeply in what it meant to be a husband and a father, and you lived that belief out, every single day. There were times I did things you weren’t proud of, times we didn’t see eye to eye, but once we got past it, you were simply Dad again. No conditions. No score kept.
Today, I don’t want to remember you only through tears. I want to remember your life. Your voice. Your smile. Your ways. The things that made you laugh, and all the small things about you we never realized, in the moment, would one day become some of our most treasured memories. There is something about losing a parent that changes you forever. A father holds a place in his daughter’s heart that no one else can ever fill. And now that you’re gone, I understand, more than ever, just how precious time truly is.
Dad, there are things I wish I could say to you one more time. One more conversation. One more hug. Just one more moment to tell you how much you meant to me.
But today, I simply want to say thank you. Thank you for being my father. Thank you for the memories. Thank you for the lessons. Thank you, God, for every year we were blessed to have him. I am so proud that I was allowed to be your daughter. I love you, I always will, and I will always miss you. I am grateful for every memory we shared, and I pray your legacy continues from generation to generation.
Your journey on this earth may have ended, but your story has not. Your life continues through your children, your grandchildren, your family, and everyone who carries a piece of you in their heart. We will speak your name. We will tell your stories. And we will keep your memory alive.
Although my heart is broken today, I am so grateful I had the privilege of calling you Dad. So this is not goodbye. It’s until we meet again.
Rest peacefully, Daddy. You have finished your journey — now you can rest.
You will always be remembered. You will always be missed. And most of all, you will always be loved.
Forever your daughter.
