Nancy Steagall

2025 – 2025
Lived in Franklin, Indiana

Let the memory of Nancy be with us forever.

Nancy Louise (Beers) Steagall, 78, of Franklin, Indiana, entered heaven peacefully on September 30, 2025, surrounded by her family. She was born on November 25, 1946, to the late Forrest Luke and Lillian May (Jones) Beers, in Indianapolis, Indiana. Nancy married Benjamin on March 24, 1967. She devoted her life to being a homemaker, and most importantly, a loving wife and mother. She was fiercely loyal to her family, often willing to sacrifice her own interests for the benefit of others. With a love for interior design, accompanied by a skilled artistic eye, her home was immaculate. She had a knack for doodling images into the margins of her Bible and painting trails of flowers across furniture and walls to make them just a little bit different, a little bit Nancy. She appreciated things that were out of the ordinary and uncommon, like herself. Everything could be improved with a little Pine-Sol, Clorox bleach, and Windex, and if you stood still long enough, she might come at you with the Spray ‘n Wash. Nancy loved to be outside. Much like the inside of her home, her expertise for perfection extended to her lawn care. She spent many hours ensuring her lawn was as impeccable as her flawless décor. She enjoyed fishing with her mother, who was also her best friend. One of her favorite phrases was, “The higher the hair, the closer to heaven,” which she accomplished for many years with staggeringly tall high heels and extra-extra-hold hairspray. While she had her own unique fashion sense and style, she was not opposed to getting her hands dirty through hard work. In a second, she would take off her diamond rings and pick up whatever needed to be done. She was always willing to help others accomplish their tasks, especially when it came to work around the church. Painting, sanding, hammering—she could do it all, and she did. Nancy was a creature of habit, an organized list maker and planner, but she was always willing to change her plans if another opportunity sounded like a better time. She could be ready in an instant for an afternoon of bargain shopping, a quick road trip in the semi-truck with Ben, or a beach vacation (even though she found the beach slightly boring and the ocean ominous at night). For Nancy, her little bit of heaven on earth was Nashville, Indiana, and she visited every fall with her son, Bill. She started each day the same way: drinking a pot or two of coffee, turning on the radio, making the bed, and always, whether she planned to leave the house or not, putting on a few swipes of makeup. Her house was never quiet; she listened to everything from what she called “long-haired music,” or classical, because of Beethoven’s powdered wig, to Elvis Presley and 1950s do-wop, to bluegrass and gospel like Rhonda Vincent and Alison Krauss, and talk radio. This was her motivation and fuel: coffee and music. Nancy never knew a stranger. She was kind and loving, and she never missed an opportunity to crack a joke, find a relatable commonality, and share a compliment. In every situation, she just wanted to have fun, whether in the grocery store or at church. Somehow, she remembered every birthday and anniversary; a card, handwritten in beautiful, scrawling script, would appear in the mail days and sometimes weeks in advance, filled with her best wishes and promise of love “forever and always.” Nancy was saved at the age of 13 at a tent revival and became a faithful follower of Jesus Christ. She was a member of Greenwood Bible Baptist Church in Greenwood, Indiana. She had a heart to serve and joined many ministries, including welcoming guests on Sunday mornings, serving in the senior ministry, and assisting with baptisms. She had many dear friends in the congregation and truly loved her church family and Pastor Poynter. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Benjamin Steagall; her son, William (Marlana) Steagall; her granddaughters, Morgan and Mackenzie Steagall; and her brother, Bill (Sandy) Beers. Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, Forrest and Lilian (Jones) Beers, and her brothers, Dennis Beers and Jeffery Beers.

My Testimony: Nancy Steagall I was 13 years old, in a tent revival in 1960, when Christ came into my heart and life. I was changed forever. It all happened on a very hot July night. A neighbor friend, Mae Nance, stopped by our house and asked my mother if I could go with her to a tent revival in Greenwood that night. When we got there, I saw a large white tent with deep wood shavings on the ground under the tent to walk on. It was so hot you could smell the wood shavings. We sat down. I sat on the inside aisle. I remember the minister preaching very loudly and telling us how to be saved and accept Christ as our Savior and live with Him forever. I remember standing and singing at the and feeling God’s hand touch my heart. I started to cry, and all of a sudden, I was in the front of that big crowd and someone was telling me about my salvation. To this day, I remember everything about that night in detail, except how I got up in the front. I don’t remember walking, and I was a very shy and backward little girl. It’s almost like God carried me up there. I remember feeling so good inside because God now lived inside my heart, and from then on, He’s helped me make a lot of decisions in my life, the right ones. And when I was afraid, He’s always let me know that everything was going to be alright. He’s given me peace and calmness when I most needed Him. We had been going to a Baptist church in our neighborhood, but after my salvation, all of my family were saved one by one within the next few months. I will always remember my friend Mae Nance being an instrument in me meeting Christ for real, for when you’re saved, you’ll know it in your heart. I did. He’s real.
