Sophie Jankovics (nee Hedrich), 76, died 8 Mar 2016 in hospice care in Schaumburg, IL. She was born in Pancevo, Yugoslavia (now Serbia) on 5 Mar 1940 to Viktor and Hilde Hedrich (nee Hein). The family was reunited after the war. Their mother tongue was German, but they also spoke some Croatian. Sophie was confirmed in the Roman Catholic faith on 22 Mar 1953. The family of four emigrated to the United States in Sep 1956, destined for Chicago, IL. There, Sophie became fluent in English and worked as an experienced furrier. Sophie married Horst Walter Augustin, a house painter by trade, on 19 Oct 1957 at Saint Aloysius Catholic Church in Chicago at the age of 17. They had two children; Walter Horst and Hilda Augustin. They divorced in 1961. Sophie married Joseph Frank Orawczyk, a baby photographer by trade, on 14 Jun 1961 in Chicago. He legally adopted Walter and Hilda Augustin on 11 Dec 1961. They had one child; Joseph John Orawczyk. They had an amicable divorce on 18 Mar 1975. Sophie and Simon Jankovics married in 1976. Simon owned an auto repair shop, and Sophie ran for car parts and kept the books for their business. Sophie enjoyed gardening, cooking, knitting, crocheting, macrame, needlepoint, listening to classical music, reading, traveling, camping, swimming and sitting around the campfire. She was also a landlord of three residential properties on Bowmanville Ave, and worked hard to maintain the rentals. Sophie was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, her son Walter and her husband Simon. She is survived by her daughter Hilda Carey (John) of Schaumburg, IL, her son Joe J. Orawczyk (Anna) of Yermo, CA; six grandchildren Caitlin Augustin, Aidan Augustin, Christina Carey, John Carey (Carrie), Maryann Orawczyk, and Sarah Orawczyk; 6 great-grandchildren, and two nephews; Robert and Thomas Hedrich of Fox Lake, IL. Sophie and Simon were cremated and interned in Rosehill Cemetery in Chicago, IL in 2016.
