DC Clure

1926 – 2088
Lived in Phoenix, AZ

Let the memory of DC be with us forever.

Per Gladys Clure (in 1998) Gladys was in her first marriage to Jack Larken Gorman , & had 4 kids. Jack Gorman was in poor health. Mr. & Mrs Gorman (Jack's parents) wanted Gladys to give up the kids and take care of Jack. Gladys did not want to do this. Instead she put Jack in a hospital and filed for divorce. At the time the divorce was filed, little George was about 6 months old (mid 1948). While she was married to Jack, she had met DC, thru her sister Oralee. Oralee was married to DC's brother Henry Clure. DC would have nothing to do with Gladys since she was married. After Gladys's divorce to Jack, DC started dating her. They married Dec. 19, 1956. They dated for several years before marriage. DC went on disability income in the early 1980s' when his lung disease would no longer allow him to work. In DC's second marriage he gained 4 kids, there were 2 boys and 2 girls. He didn't have any kids till now. He loved kids.

DC was very quiet and did not show much emotion. Other than a laugh when something was funny. He made the best home made Banana Pudding and Fried Chicken. DC did a lot of the cooking at home. He liked camping, fishing and hunting. At one time he owned a boat and we went to the lake a lot. Yet neither Gladys or DC could swim. (SDB)

DC was a friendly person, always kind and helpful.

DC had about an 3rd grade education, quitting school to help at the family home, like most families did in the early 1920's. Even with only 3rd grade education, he could use paper and pencil to figure out square footage of space and figure out how much tile was needed for the job and what to charge the customer.

I can remember when he had all his teeth pulled and the false teeth put in. I drove him to his dentist appointment and back home. On the way home he was laughing at himself because he whistled while he talked. It was so funny, he was so drunk from the medicines. (SDB)

DC had a first marriage, name and dates of first marriage not known.

Music- DC played the guitar as a young man. I was about age 7 when I last remember dad playing the guitar. Per daughter Shirley.

Flying airplanes- There was a cousin to DC that was a pilot of a small aircraft . Gladys (wife) told of DC in the airplane with his "cousin" and they would fly low over the home of Gladys while they were dating. Gladys got very mad one time, because she had a bad headache that day. Per daughter Shirley. I believe this person was Andy Plott.

Lunch at work- The summer's in Phoenix, Arizona were very hot. DC was employed as a tile settler's helper and worked in a non-air conditioned environment. Because it was so hot, he would go to work very early in the day. He would leave the house as early as 3 or 4:00 am so he could be home before the heat was unbearable. For lunch he would pack a sandwich and chips and a snack. Most of the time he would take a "Hostess Snowball" cake for desert. I can remember a lot of days he would come home with his black metal lunch box and I would look inside and the "Snowball" would still be there. He would always let me have it. He knew what I was looking for! Per daughter Shirley.

Boating- In the early 1970's DC brought a boat. The boat was light blue in color, had about 6 seats, an out broad motor and was as long as a vehicle. We spent many weekends at a near by lake called Lake Plesant near Phoenix, AZ. The very first time we took the boat to the lake, we had no idea on how to get it in the water. We pulled up to the loading dock and just looked around. Soon, 2 teenage boys came up and offered to help. After the boat was in the water, DC gave the boys a ride in the boat as a thank you. The boat was the source of spending many family weekends together. DC and the boys (Don & Joe) spent time on the boat fishing or water skiing. Sometimes we would invite friends for the day. I believe the boat was sold in the late 1970's. Per daughter Shirley.

DC never told us much about his parents. He said DC didn't stand for any other name. We were never told where he was born other than the State of Georgia. He grew up in the Young Harris area. The family moved around often. According to 1930 US census report his name was Daniel C Clure.

It's June-Fathers Day Month... My Dad : When DC (Daniel C?) Clure was born on February 9, 1926, in Thomaston, Upson, Georgia, his father, William, was 49 and his mother, Oria, was 36. His place of birth is uncertain, as it is listed as a different place on different documents. >DC's Birth Certificate has his place of birth as Thomaston, GA, no county listed. There is a Thomaston in Upson County. >On his WWII draft registration he listed Bibb, GA at the age of 14. Unknown if he meant Bibb the city or Bibb the county. >He listed his place of birth as Musella, Crawford, GA on his Social Secrurity Form in 1947 at age 21. Musella and Thomston are in neighboring counties. >And on his son, Don's birth certificate he listed Greene County, GA as the father's (DC) birth place at age 32. I'm going with his birth certificate place of birth as his true place of birth. However, I am bewildered as to why all the different places of birth on the documents. Maybe other people gave out the info and really didn't know the correct answer. DC's occupations included: >worked at a service station -per DC. Unknown which one, but he wittnessed from outside the station and through a window, his boss kill a man who was robbing the station. per family story told by my Uncle Frank Pruitt@2010. Boss's name was Mr. De-monny/Deonie sp?. Friend to Uncle Frank. Uncle Frank brought or was given the gun. Uncle Frank gave the gun to Joe Clure (son of DC Clure). This gas station was in the neighbourhood of Grandma Mary Pruitt (Mother of Gladys Pruitt). When Jack Gorman was a kid and staying at Grandma Mary's house, he would throw rocks at DC as he walked by on his way to work at the gas station. DC and his Mother; Oria Plott Clure lived on the same street. Gladys and DC eventually got together and married. This is something Dad and I have in common, both of us has seen someone killed by a gun during the shooting. >a cook at restaurants. (DC was the cook in our family and a very good one, it was mostly southern food-deep fried.) Best fried chicken and potatoes gravy. >car painter. He painted cars in Georgia. He painted daughter Shirley's first car in the front yard with no breathing protection in 1976. >tile setter/helper in GA and in AZ. This was his longest held position, about 30 years. A tile setter is permitted to lay the tile and a helper assist the setter. In AZ, DC worked with a man named Ish. Ish would have DC lay the tile in one bathroom while Ish did another bathroom. Many days they got away with this, but some days they would get caught by the inspector and then Ish would be fined. Ish said he would pay the fine to get more work done and that DC's work was just as good as his. >Approximately 1946 DC married his first wife in GA, Lois Virginia Tullis. DC was 20 and Lois was 18 years old when they married. DC and Lois both lived in Lawrencevillve, GA in 1930 per the 1930 Census, DC was 4 years old and Lois was 2 years old. Their marriage ended Sept 1947, when DC returned home from work one day to find her and her belongings gone. Lois remarried very soon after and had a son in Feb 1948. Do the math, could be by either man. Yes, it's possible there is a half sibling. >DC married his second wife Gladys Audrey Pruitt in Lawrenceville, Georgia, nearly 10 years after the divorce, in Dec 1956. They had three children during their marriage Don, Shirley, & Joe. Gladys gave him 4 bonus children from her first marriage; Jack, Patsy, Helen (Mickey) and George Gorman. Giving DC a total of seven children. DC moved his family to Arizona about 1962-1963. >DC died on February 16, 1988, in Phoenix, Arizona, at the age of 62, and was buried in Glendale, Arizona. Cause of death Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and Congestive Heart Failure (CHF). He was a heavy smoker for about 25 years, quitting in 1968 at the age of 42. Toxic exsposure from painting cars and tile setting probably was a factor in his COPD also. >All our life we knew our dad as "DC", he said it didn't stand for anything when he was ask, he said his parents ran out of names. Well come to find out, DC probably stands for Daniel C. Clure per the 1940 Census where he was 14 years old. Still his middle name remains a mystery. A family name possibility could be "Cebearn" from one of his paternal Uncles. DC was one of 10 children, two died at birth. Walter, Andrew, Baby Boy, Benjamin, Elbert, Cecil, William, Baby Boy, Rosa Louise and last DC. Only one girl!
